Barbering Intermediate Diploma at Derby College

Course description

To gain this professional qualification, awarded by City & Guilds, you will learn and perfect a variety of technical and related skills in hairdressing for gents. 

You will also develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills.

Course content

You will cover:

  •  Shampooing and hair conditioning
  •  Health and safety
  •  Cutting hair using basic barbering techniques
  •  Cutting facial hair to shape
  •  Changing men's hair colour
You will also develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills.

Entry requirements

The selection process involves a formal interview, attendance at a taster in hairdressing and online screening testing in literacy and numeracy.  You will need a profile of GCSEs at grades D or above in English and Maths or screening results at Level 1 for Literacy and Numeracy.


You are required to complete a portfolio of evidence.  Assessment is through a range of methods, including practical observations of work with clients, online testing and assignment work.  Maths and English will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam.

Future opportunities

Further study
You can progress to an advanced apprenticeship or the full-time Level 3 programme, where you will continue to develop your skills in maths and English.

This course paves the way to employment in salons or to self employment.
