According to recent research, nine out of ten companies feel they need more foreign language speakers. These employers say that an additional language gives people an edge in interviews and they can earn more. 74% of the world’s population does not speak English. The value of a Modern Language course should not be underestimated and it opens many doors, particularly in the areas of business and commerce. So many people visit other countries for work or leisure purposes and we believe all pupils will benefit by continuing with their language studies. What better reasons for studying French at Key Stage 4? IMPORTANT Pupils choosing a Modern Language to GCSE level must have studied that language at Key Stage 3. How will I be assessed? This is a two year GCSE which is assessed at the end of Year 11. Students will be awarded a GCSE on the National Curriculum Key Stage 4 A* - G grading system. The course is multi media and covers the 4 skills:- • Listening | 20% of the mark • Reading | 20% of the mark • Writing | 30% of the marks • Speaking | 30% of the marks In Listening and Reading there are 2 leves of assessment:- Foundation | C - G Higher | A* - D Students may be entered for either Foundation or Higher in each of these two skills, e.g. Foundation Listening and Higher Reading. There is no seperate levels for Speaking and Writing.
