AS/A2 Chemistry at Trinity Sixth Form Consortium

Course description

The course aims to develop your understanding of key chemical concepts. Students are expected to complete interesting and challenging practical projects, in order to apply their knowledge. It combines well with other science subjects and mathematics. Chemistry would suit a student who enjoys applying theoretical learning to practical situations and who enjoys laboratory work

Course content

Chemistry would suit a student who enjoys applying theoretical learning in to practical situations. Students will develop a good understanding of the need for precision and detail in their work. The majority of the Chemistry course is based upon application of knowledge to problems. The course is structured so that there are six periods a week shared between two teachers, with a double Chemistry lesson dedicated to practical work. A significant part of the Chemistry course involves independant laboratory work. There is also a storng mathematical element to the course in units one and four.

Entry requirements

Grade B pass in Chemistry or B in Additional Science at GCSE

Assessment

Modular course with examinations in June.  Coursework assessment completed during the second term.

AS Course: CHEM 1-Foundation Chemistry, CHEM 2 -Chemistry in Action, CHEM 3-Investigative practical skills (coursework component)

A2 Course: CHEM4-Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry, CHEM 5-Energetics, REDOX and Inorganic Chemistry, CHEM 6-Investigative practical skills (Coursework component)

Future opportunities

Chemistry is a highly valued academic qualification and may lead to a variety of careers including medicine, pharmacy, industrial chemistry, engineering, medicinal chemistry and scientific journalism.  Successful chemistry students are highly sought after and many work in public services, technical sales, finance and investment

Further information

Students find post-16 chemistry even more interesting as they begin to discover the real resons why chemicals react with one another.  The course extends some of the subject matter encountered in the Chemistry section of the GCSE course such as electronic arrangements, rate of reactions and fractional distillation. There is also the introduction to some new branches of Chemistry such as chemical calculations, aromatic chemistry, kinetics, thermodynamics and transition metal chemistry.

Alongside the theory, students learn some important chemical technicques such as titrations, distillation, filtration and checking the purity of compounds. Overall the AS and A Level Chemistry course is a demanding but very rewarding subject to study. Students will learn the detail of chemical reactions and will gain a deep appreciation of Chemistry and the significance of Chemistry to everyday life
