Engineering BTEC Diploma Level 3 at Croydon College
You can choose between a one and two year course. After having successfully completed the one year course, which is equivalent to 1/1.5 A Levels, you can then progress on to the second year, which is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
This course is designed for those who have an interest in engineering, with a desire to have a career within this sector. We will provide you with the practical experience and the technical knowledge to work in the engineering industry and you will develop the skills that you will have learnt on a Level 2 course. This programme is delivered through a combination of theory and practical lessons in our contemporary engineering workshops.
You will study nine units each in both the first year and the second year. This will cover a range of subjects, including mechanical/electrical principles, mechanical systems and measurements, engineering drawing/design, CAD, fluid dynamics, and health and safety practices.
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.
It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.
This programme is delivered by our fully qualified and professional staff. You will benefit from working with CAD/CAM machinery, a PLC suite, Instrumentation & Control software and hardware, Rapid Prototyper (3D Printer), as well as industry standard workshops with modern technology.
You will have the opportunity to design an engineered project component. This will be achieved by using raw materials and state of the art engineering equipment.
A key distinguishing feature of the college is our links with employers and the ways in which we incorporate this into your learning. Employers such as Gatwick Airport attend our popular employability events and you can discuss Apprenticeships and progression opportunities in our Employability Hub or in the Apprenticeship Office.
A minimum of 4 GCSEs grade C or higher, one being English or maths or a related Level 2 vocational course at Merit or higher (if a Pass grade is achieved GCSE grades and/or functional skills results can also be considered).
English and maths assessed at Level 1 or above.
To progress to the second year Extended Diploma qualification you will need to successfully complete the first year of this course and demonstrate good attendance and punctuality at the College.
You will be assessed over nine units, each with three or four written assignments.
Completion of this course can lead to progression to an engineering degree. Former students have gone on to study at Kingston University and Brunel University.
Alternatively, you can enter employment within the engineering industry. Future careers can include aerospace engineering, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and aircraft maintenance.
