Health & Social Care A Level at Havant Sixth form College

Course description

This course combines academic study with practical experience and is an ideal choice if you’re hoping to pursue a career in health, early years education or social work. The research, evaluation and problem-solving skills you’ll develop will be valuable preparation for Higher Education courses.

Course content

The course focuses on clients’ needs, professional services (provision and legislation), working in health and social care, human development and supporting individuals who use the services. There is an opportunity to tailor portfolio content to prospective career choices, which has proved an invaluable asset for our students to prepare for their futures.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above; must include English, Mathematics and a Science, or other equivalent qualifications.

This is a rigorously academic course with two thirds of the work being assessed by coursework. You must be prepared to allocate time outside of lessons to plan and prepare what could be seen as challenging material. Sufficient time must also be given to wider subject reading.

Assessment

By coursework portfolio and external examinations.

Future opportunities

This course is designed to provide progression to Higher Education and further training for employment in a health science profession, early years care & education and social care. Dependent on their combination of subjects, students have previously gone on to nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, teaching, radiology, youth and community studies, social policy, health studies and social work.

Further information

We have excellent links with local health, early years’ education and social care providers, who provide an interactive experience for our students. This is in the form of focus groups, presentations and visits. We fully encourage student involvement in various volunteer projects to provide a practical application to the subject and enhance their learning experience.
