Media, Art and Design - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion Textiles at Wakefield College

Course description

This course is aimed at developing your artistic skills in fashion and textiles to a very high standard. In Year 1 you will study towards the 90-Credit Diploma which emphasises the exploration of a wide range of techniques, with creation of textile fashion being central to every project. We also look closely at the work of others and strive to create exciting, experimental outcome that are supported by innovative sketchbooks. In Year 2 you will progress to the Extended Diploma and focus on creating more specialist fashion and textile pieces. You will begin to work more independently, developing ideas of a more personal nature, the course culminates in a final self-initiated project and exhibition to showcase your collection of creative work.

Course content

The Extended Diploma consists of thirteen units to which research, experimentation and development of ideas are key. You will explore a variety of textile, fashion and art related techniques with a view to producing creative solution in the fashion and textiles field. Specialist techniques will consist of Fabric manipulation Hand and machine embroidery Surface pattern Printed textiles Fashion visualisation Fashion presentation techniques Design development Drawing techniques Basic garment construction During the first year, you will sample a variety of materials, techniques and process, produce design work, visit galleries and exhibitions and produce creative outcomes in fashion and textile related outcomes to appropriate audiences. Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you. Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4) including English and Maths
4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4)
Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and
Grade D (new grade 3) or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other

L2 Diploma or equivalent at Merit Grade, plus GCSE English or Maths at grade C (or new grade 4), plus L1 or L2 English or Maths

A portfolio of work


How you will be assessed

Internal assessment will be continuous with external verification before completion. You will produce work towards a portfolio of evidence generated by your studies. This portfolio attracts further points towards entry to Higher Education.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.

Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Further study

This qualification offers progression to a variety of art-related courses. Our own Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is a recommended progression route, or you may wish to apply to a university. During the course we will explain all the possible options and support you through the application process.
