AAT Accounting Foundation Certificate (Double - Pre-Apprenticeship) at East Norfolk Sixth Form College

Course description

The Foundation Certificate in Accounting teaches students how to work effectively in finance using a range of basic accounting principles and techniques, from costing and double-entry book-keeping to computerised accounting. The course forms part of a recognised route for those entering the accountancy profession. It will take up 2 blocks of teaching plus an accounting work placement so together this will form your complete programme of study.

Course content

A student studying for this qualification will develop skills in double-entry book-keeping and will learn how to use journals and control accounts. Students will also learn how to use an accounting software package (e.g. SAGE) and how to process financial information.

The course involves 5 mandatory units:

  • Book-keeping transactions
  • Book-keeping controls
  • Elements of costing
  • Using accounting software
  • Work effectively in finance

The aim is to take students through the basic process of entering financial data, preparing reports and understanding financial controls for both manual and computerised accounting systems. There will be a chance to look at how a business records and calculates costs and a consideration of stock control. The use of ledger systems and preparing bank reconciliations are also useful skills that will be introduced during the course.

There is an intention to give students an understanding of the demands of working within the finance function of a business or in an accountancy practice. It will even equip them with some basic skills should they decide they would like to run their own business.
