A Level Drama and Theatre Studies at Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School

AS

Unit 1 – Exploration of Drama and Theatre (40% of AS) Exploration of two contrasting plays and study of a key practitioner. An evaluation of a live performance.

Unit 2 – Text in Performance (60% of AS) A practical examination of acting in a directed production of a published play. The performance of a monologue or duologue.

A2

Unit 3 – Exploration of Dramatic Performance (40% of A2) A devised performance and written portfolio.

Unit 4 – Theatre Text in Context (60% of A2) Exploration of a set text and review of theatre performance in an historical period.

Course content

You will work as a director, a devisor, a designer and a performer to develop Drama from script and other stimuli. You will take part in practical workshops and rehearsals as well as engaging in regular ‘seminar’ style lessons where you will contribute to discussions and make notes. Through this style of learning you will get to grips with Theatre as an art form and understand the development and history of different theatrical movements and styles as well as developing your own skills as a performer.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a Grade B in both GCSE Drama and GCSE English Literature is advised.

Assessment

AS—There is no written exam at AS level, you are assessed on practical and written coursework, completed under controlled conditions as well as in a performance exam to a visiting examiner.

A2—You will be assessed on practical performance and accompanying written work. You will also undertake a written exam at the end of the course.

 

Future opportunities

Many pupils go on to study Drama, Theatre Studies or Performing Arts at university or drama school. Many university courses value this subject as it imparts critical and analytical skills as well as contributing to communication skills. Pupils have gone on to study courses as diverse as Law and Medicine after studying this course.

    • Welcome to our Sixth Form at Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School.  I hope that you will enjoy reading our prospectus.  It will give you a flavour of what we offer, but we hope that you will come and meet our students and staff so that you can get a real sense of what the QE Sixth Form offers.
      The school and the Sixth Form were inspected by Ofsted in March 2014 and I was pleased that the Sixth Form was judged to be ‘good’ and a strength of the school.  We are proud to be a comprehensive Sixth Form and proud of the progress that our pupils make, irrespective of their prior attainment at GCSE.
      This means that pupils who have done well at GCSE are likely to achieve very high grades, whilst pupils who have done less well can also flourish, provided they are prepared to work hard. We do not have such high proportions of top grades as selective schools and Sixth Form colleges because we admit a wide range of students. Able students achieve very well, but girls who did less well at GCSE still achieve success at A level. This is reflected in the very high ‘value added’ measures achieved consistently year after year.
      Our priorities are:

      • High achievement for all.
      • Enabling every student to fulfil her potential.
      • Development of self-confidence and the personal and teamwork skills which will enable each individual to succeed in all aspects of 21st Century life.

      Our success in this is reflected in the school’s strong examination results.  Most of our students go on to university and the destinations list is impressive.  Ofsted confirmed that attainment is good.  Students are also supported to pursue other routes which are increasingly available in today’s workplace such as modern apprenticeships.  Students across the ability range achieve considerable success in our Sixth Form and our value added outcomes have been ‘outstanding’ for well over 10 years which few schools in the country can equal.
      This is helped by outstanding teaching, pastoral support and guidance on higher education and careers. There is an ethos of hard work and achievement, but students enjoy their time in the Sixth Form and contribute much to enrich school life for the whole community.
