Health and Social Care Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

This qualification extends the first year course to enable you to complete the full Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care (Level 3) which will mean you can apply for a degree level course or to enter the workplace. At this point, options are available to allow both a health studies or a social care pathway depending on a student’s interests or career direction.

The college has excellent links with many relevant and high quality work experience placements and as part of your study programme, you will continue to have the opportunity to undertake work experience and gain real 'hands-on' experience in a relevant setting such as a care home, nursery, hospital or other specialist area and will relate learning in the classroom to health and care settings. This valuable experience will further develop your skills and knowledge and aid your career choice.

Course content

Your main programme will include topics such as, Public Health, Health Education, Dementia Physiological Disorders, Personal & Professional Development as well as optional units.

You will be expected to develop your skills through group/team work as well as independent research skills.

You will set an individual learning plan, setting your own targets during tutorial sessions and there are opportunities for you to stretch and challenge your own learning and development.

You will follow a study programme to help you develop a range of skills that will support your progress to employment or to further study and will give you the edge in the jobs market.

This will include English and maths by continuing to embed and build on your skills as these subjects are relevant to the industry you are interested in working in.

You will develop skills in communication and multi-disciplinary teamwork as part of professional development workshops, and will complete projects that enhance the curriculum such as those around equality and diversity, fundraising and entrepreneurial skills. 

You will be required to achieve all these aspects of your course as well as the main programme.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A*-C including maths, English Language and science

Assessment

You will complete a range of assessments including poster and presentation work, assignments, case studies and projects.

Future opportunities

Fast-track to an apprenticeship

If you can’t find the right apprenticeship vacancy or you want to do some studying first - no problem. You can start on a vocational study programme then once you’re ready and a vacancy becomes available, we’ll help you transfer on to an apprenticeship.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
