A level Product Design at Garforth Academy
The course will develop your capacity to design & make products & appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture & marketing. Students in the past have gone on to study courses at university such as civil engineering, industrial design & photography. Careers include automotive design, marketing construction & marketing.
Paper 1: Core Technical Principals (Exam) 25% of total grade
The exam uses a range of multiple choice, short and extended response questions to assess the 10 sub-units that make up the core technical principals. These include areas such as materials and their applications and digital design and manufacture. The units are covered over the two year course.
Paper 2: Core Designing and Making Principals (Exam) 25% of total grade
The exam takes on a similar format to paper 1 with a mixture of different responses required, however there are two distinct sections that focus on product analysis and commercial manufacture respectively. There are 12 sub-units that focus on more specific areas covered in the exam and these are all covered over the 2 year course.
Practical Application of Technical, Design and Making principals (Coursework) 50% of total grade
Students will complete a substantial design and make task that will require knowledge of the core principals covered in Papers 1 and 2 as well as additional specialist knowledge. Students will be expected to complete this over 45 dedicated hours with evidence also provided in the form of a written or digital design portfolio with photographic evidence of the final product and processes.
5 GCSEs at Grades 9-4 including
Grade C in GCSE Design and Technology course (if taken)
Students achieving grade 4/C or above in creative subjects may be accepted on an individual basis.
