Refrigeration and Air Conditioning EAL Level 2 VRQ Diploma at Bath College

Course description

This course covers the intermediate level knowledge and understanding of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment engineering. It focuses on practical skills and knowledge to allow you to gain practical experience and some expectation of the type of situations you could face in the industry workplace.


The programme has been developed in consultation with colleges and training associations to ensure that it meets the needs of the engineering sector.


This diploma does not require evidence of work experience.

Course content

There is a mix of mandatory and specialist modules.



  • Engineering environment awareness
  • Engineering techniques
  • Engineering principles



  • Non-fusion joining techniques
  • Basic electrical circuit inspection/testing and fault diagnosis
  • Installation and servicing of air conditioning equipment
  • Installation and servicing of refrigeration equipment


Additional offered qualification will be F-GAS 2079 CAT 1

Entry requirements

16-18-year-old applicants: Foundation in Engineering Technology Level 1 or the Access to Building Services Engineering Level 1 and a good pass in an aptitude test.


Adults: a good pass in an aptitude test


All applicants:  4 GCSEs at grade D or above including Maths and English, one of which should be at grade C or a full relevant Level 1 qualification at Merit grade with English and Maths at an appropriate level.


You will be assessed through a portfolio of work and online exams.

Future opportunities

If you gain employment in the Air Conditioning or Refrigeration Industry you will be able to move on to the NVQ 2 programme as an apprentice or adult learner.
