Geography A-Level at Tavistock Community College

Course description

The first year of this course is an AS level qualification and consists of 2 units of study. The student may continue to study for a second year in order to gain an A2 qualification. This varied course investigates on a local, regional and global scale. Geography will suit students with an interest in environmental, economic and political issues. Throughout the course students will develop a range of geographical skills enabling them to analyse problems and issues. The units studied at AS level are: • Unit 1: Global Challenges. Going Global – issues around Globalisation and the changing world. World at risk – natural hazards and disasters. • Unit 2: Geographical Investigations. Extreme weather – extreme weather events around the world. Rebranding places – urban and rural regeneration. Unit 2 contains two field trips to Boscastle and the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C grades including a B grade in the chosen or other Humanities subject


100% Exam.

Future opportunities

A Level Geography can be accepted as either a science or an arts subject at universities. The skills developed are helpful in a number of careers including environmental, water resource and transport management, urban planning, and many IT roles requiring an understanding of GIS patterns.
