Art and Design A Level at St Michael's Church of England High School

Course description

Students may wish stay on in the 6th Form to study Art at A/S and A2 level. Again we follow the WJEC specification at this level, as the marking scheme and the board’s expectations are very similar to GCSE. We have found that this aids the transition to a higher level from G.C.S.E.

In Year 12 students complete a project of their own choice (Unit 1) which leads to a personal outcome in any media they choose - or combinations of media. Unit 2 is an externally set project set by the board that will allow all students a wide and open ended choice of questions.

When students reach Year 13, they are again expected to produce a project of their own choice, (Unit 3), which has a greater concentration on contextual studies and includes a 1,000 word essay. Unit 4, is again, an externally set project.

Students leave St Michael’s with the necessary skills and confidence to go on and further their Art Education in foundation courses or universities.
