German A Level at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School

Course description

The courses encourage students to:

·         communicate confidently in German both through the spoken and written word

·         develop insights into the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries where German is spoken

The 2 themes covered in Year 12 are:

·         Travel and exploration (Advantages of travelling, working and studying abroad, environmental concerns, local culture and festivals in Germany)

·         Contemporary youth culture (Entertainment, music and the arts, media and digital culture, youth sub-cultures, trends and personal identity)

The 2 themes covered in Year 13 are:

·         Diversity and difference Migration and integration, cultural identity and marginalisation, cultural enrichment and celebrating difference, discrimination and diversity

                 .          The making of Modern Germany. 1989 onwards.

Course content

AS Level

The AS Level exam can be taken as a stand-alone exam at the end of Year 12.

Component 1: Speaking

Learners are not permitted to use dictionaries in any part of the assessment.

Non-exam assessment: 12-15 minutes (plus additional 15 minutes preparation time) 30% of qualification.

·         Task 1 Argue a point of view based on a written stimulus card (6-7 minutes)

·         Task 2 Discussion based on a written stimulus card with questions (6-8 minutes)

Component 2: Listening, Reading and Translation

Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes, 50% of qualification. Learners are not permitted to use dictionaries in any part of the assessment.

Section A: Listening

Section B: Reading

Section C: Translation – from German into English and English into German

Component 3: Critical response in writing (closed book)

Written examination: 1 hour 15 minutes, 20% of qualification.

Learners are not permitted to use dictionaries in any part of the assessment.

·         Two essay questions based on the study of one literary work or film from the prescribed list. 

A Level

The A level exam is taken at the end of Year 13

Component 1: Speaking

Non-exam assessment: 21-23 minutes (including 5 minutes preparation)

30% of qualification. Learners are not permitted to use dictionaries in any part of the assessment.

·         Task 1 - (a) Presentation of independent research project, usually a book or film (2 minutes) (b) Discussion on the content of the research project (9-10 minutes)

·         Task 2 - Discussion based on a stimulus card relating to one of the themes studied (5 minutes preparation time followed by 5-6 minutes discussion)

Component 2: Listening, Reading and Translation

Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes, 50% of qualification. Learners are not permitted to use dictionaries in any part of the assessment.

·         Section A: Listening exam

·         Section B: Reading exam

·         Section C: Translation – from German into English and English into German

Component 3: Critical and analytical response in writing

Written examination: 2 hours, 20% of qualification. Learners are not permitted to use dictionaries in any part of the assessment.

·         Two essays – one based on a literary work and the second on an additional literary work or film from the prescribed list 

 

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE German and grade C in English Language.

Further information

German is used as much as possible in lessons. We use authentic items from German radio, television, magazines, newspapers and the internet. We have a state of the art 22 position digital language laboratory and interactive whiteboards in every classroom with internet access. There is also a German Language Assistant who helps students to develop their spoken German. Our students also have the opportunity complete a one week work experience placement in Germany at the end of Year 12
