Entry requirements

You should have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE level, although an A or A* grade will put you at a distinct advantage.

You will want to get involved and participate in lessons as the subject is an interactive one. You should also have an interest in French society and culture.

AS French is a language-based qualification testing all four language skills - there is no literature. It offers a natural transition from GCSE as many of the topics to be studied will already be familiar to you.

A2 French further develops all four language skills through the study of more advanced topics, most of which will be new to you. You will also have the opportunity to study aspects of French language, culture and society, including French literature and cinema.

The final examination will cover all four language skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Future opportunities

You may choose to study French on its own or as part of a combined degree with another subject, such as Law or Business Studies. You should be aware that the vast majority of employers will accept students with a French degree onto their graduate training schemes, whether or not the work itself directly involves foreign language skills. A high proportion of our students choose to study French in order to work in a wide variety of careers.
