Sport BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Outwood Academy Newbold

Course description

BTEC Sport has been a very popular and successful course at Outwood Academy Newbold since its introduction in 2010.

Students are given the opportunity to progress to the next level of BTEC study and will allow students who enjoy sport to develop their all-round knowledge of the subject, both practically and theoretically.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport is the equivalent to one A-Level and is a 2 year course. Students opting for this course will also be expected to study other A-Level subjects alongside the BTEC. The BTEC has UCAS equivalent points linked to equivalent A Level grades.

This course will appeal to students who are enthusiastic about sport as a performer and in analysis. The specification will build on experiences from KS4 and more specifically from GCSE PE or BTEC Sport.

Course content

The course is made up of 3 compulsory units:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Fitness Training & Programme for Health, Sport and Well-being
  • Professional Development in the sports industry

Professional Development in the sports industry:

  • Sports Leadership
  • Sports Psychology
  • Practical Sports Performance

Entry requirements

Students should have achieved a Distinction level (BTEC Sport Studies) or Grade B in GCSE P.E. and a minimum Grade C GCSE in English (Students achieving a merit grade will be considered on an individual basis)


At the moment this course is examined as 100% coursework which is moderated by the examination board. The assignments will include: practical performance, group work, presentations and written work. However this is currently under review by the Government and some requirements may change.

Future opportunities

This course would be an ideal option for any individual who would want to pursue sport related courses at degree level. The specification also relates to other courses including, social sciences, health and social care, leisure and recreation. Alternatively it would also be valuable to those wishing to move directly into employment, particularly within the leisure industry.
