Photography A and AS Level at The Heathland School

Course description

The most exciting aspect of photography is that you will learn about capturing the world as you see it! Many photographers have explored various techniques to create images that make a personal statement about issues that interest or concern them. Students will embark on a course exploring practical, critical and contextual work through a range of digital, film, darkroom and studio processes. The course encourages the student to work independently and capture their visual ideas. 

Course content


  • Components1: A portfolio of work based on 4 photography  workshops with extended assignment in the students’ chosen technique. (60%);
  • Component 2: An externally Set Assignment  with a 10 hour examination. (40%).


  • Component 1: Personal Investigation and independent portfolio, accompanied with a 1000-3000 word essay. (60%);
  • Component  :  An externally Set Assignment  with a 10 hour examination. (40%).


Entry requirements

Students must attain at least 5 A*-C grades including English Language and Mathematics and a total point score of  42+ in the student’s best 8 subjects. A GCSE in Art and Design or Photography is preferred.

The career possibilities are very wide and include: Animator, Commercial Photography, Fashion Photographer, Filmmaker, Fine Art Photographer, Forensic Photographer, Industrial Photographer, Medical Photographer, Nature Photographer, Photographic Illustrator, Photographic technician, Teacher, Photojournalist, Picture Editor, Researcher, Social Photographer, Sports Photographer.
