A Level Music at Grindon Hall Christian School - GHCS
This course will give you a well-rounded understanding of music in context from both listening, analytical and composition skills and will enable you to show off your performing abilities to the highest. You will study set orchestral works and analyse in detail the composers’ ideas and develop your theory and listening skills.
The 6 units covered over the 2 year course are as follows:
1. Influences on Music
2. Creating musical ideas
3. Performing/interpreting musical ideas
4. Music in Context
5. Developing musical Ideas
6. A musical performance
Minimum entry requirements are in line with the School’s admission policy, but at least a grade B in GCSE Music is recommended. A higher level of performance on any instrument and/or voice is also required, and any extra exam theory grades would be also be beneficial.
At the end of the first year you will sit a 1 hour 45 minutes examination which is worth 30% of your AS mark (15% A2). Coursework will consist of 1 composition also 30% AS mark (15%A2) and performance recordings between 10 -15 minutes, which is worth 40% of your AS mark (20% A2). In the second year the listening exam will be 2 hours 15 minutes (20% of your overall mark). Coursework will again consist of a composition worth 15% of your mark and performances lasting between 10-15 minutes also worth 15% of your overall mark.

Music can lead on to a degree in the subject for further development, or a Teaching degree. You may be interested in looking into the music industry and recording or even become a professional musician.
