Government & Politics A level at Lowestoft Sixth Form College
Have you ever wondered who has the power to make decisions and who does not?
Politics affects virtually everything we do. It is responsible for the types of houses we live in, the amount of money we earn, the quality of education we receive.
Politics is an interesting and exciting course at l6fc, which will allow you to understand the decisions that are taken on our behalf and how they affect all aspects of our lives.
You will acquire an understanding of how political decisions are made and who has the power and authority to make those decisions.
You will examine the British democratic system by considering whether people have a ‘fair say’ in the decisions taken in this country. The course will cover issues concerning elections, pressure groups and political parties and new developments such as e-democracy and the increasing influence of the European Union. You will also learn how the different parts of the political system work, examining the roles of Parliament, the Prime Minister and the judiciary.
In your second year you will examine the ideas that underpin political debate including Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Multiculturalism and Feminism.
You will need to meet the standard college entry criteria for AS/A2 courses.
This subject is a pathway to a career in broadcasting, journalism, the legal profession, the police force and to becoming civil servants or clerks in the House of Commons. The subject combines well with a variety of other subjects including History, Law, Sociology and Psychology.
During the course, there will be many opportunities for trips and visits to places such as the Houses of Parliament. Not only will you benefit from outstanding teaching resources, you will also be given the chance to hear from expert guest speakers.
