Theatrical & Media Make-Up VTCT Level 3 Diploma at Macclesfield College

Course description

This course combines practical work with related theory in preparation for fashion, photographic, theatrical and TV make-up. The skills you will develop include casualty, special effects, prosthetic making and application of postiche. This course will also develop your communication and personal skills which are essential for this line of work.

Course content

During this course you will study both mandatory and optional units.

Mandatory units are taken in:

  • Maintaining a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
  • Client care & communication
  • Advanced fashion make-up
  • Wig style & application
  • Prosthetic application 
  • Media make-up
  • Airbrush make-up to the face
  • Camouflage make-up services

Optional units will include the following:

  • Tanning techniques
  • Fantasy hair design for performers

You will also be expected to complete 60 hours work placement in a variety of media disciplines.

Throughout the course you will build up a photographic portfolio in preparation for employment and an image research file to support your creative development.

Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade C or above. If you have achieved a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a Directed Study Programme.

Entry requirements

For this course you will need to have achieved one of the following: 

  • A Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy or Media Make up 
  • Have prior training in hairdressing to enrol on this course to ensure you have the appropriate skills to work with wigs & postiche

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.


Assessment will take place within the work place and the College’s Pure Salon . Questions will be asked on each unit to satisfy there is an understanding of the underpinning knowledge.
The types of assessment are written assignment, mood board creations, set tutor team work projects, practical observation, consultation techniques, end of unit written exam, oral questions and work experience logs.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

Financial information

For this course you will need to purchase a uniform and a kit which you will use during your course. This requirement and cost will be discussed during your admissions interview.

Future opportunities

On succesful achievement of this course you may wish to:

  • Apply to study at Higher Education such as a Foundation Degree in a related subject 
  • A career within hair and media or the theatre industry as a freelance make-up artist

Further information

The College will support you in work experience and will arrange a variety of opportunities for you to work in a real work environment. However you will be expected to network and set up your own work based activities to prepare you for a freelance career.
