Course description

Food Technology is an interesting and exciting A level area to work in, covering all the technological advances associated with food production. The course encourages an independent and individual approach to studying and demands real interest as well as practical ability. There are many opportunities to build on skills learnt in KS4 and also to develop new ones. Coursework consists of a number of focused practical tasks completed over the year to produce a portfolio of work. The emphasis is focusing on product design and manufacture. It involves practical work at all stages.


It is expected that students will have a genuine interest in Food, its origins and its preparation. There will be significant amounts of practical work both in school and in the investigation of food producers and manufacturers. Students will need to provide their own materials for food investigations and coursework projects.

Entry requirements

In order to study AS Food Technology you must have followed a GCSE course in Food Technology or related subject and obtained at least a grade B or above.

Future opportunities


The food industry is one of the largest employers in the country. This course will be of particular interest to anyone who is considering joining this industry as a career. There is currently a shortage of Food Technology graduates and many firms will offer sponsorship through university. It is a link to a range of jobs including; food science, nutritional and microbial analysis, product development, marketing and advertising, diet and lifestyle, business, journalism and teaching.
