Mathematics A Level at The Norton Knatchbull School

Course description

This is a challenging and popular course. It covers two main elements: Pure Mathematics and Applications.


Course content


. Pure elements:

These elements provide students with the tools and techniques required to solve problems in other areas of mathematics, for example Science and Engineering. The course starts by developing algebra skills before moving into:

  •   Proof,
  • algebra and functions,
  • Coordinate geometry,
  • Sequences and series,
  • Trigonometry,
  • Calculus
  • Numerical methods

These topics mirror the current GCE course however there is an increased emphasis on problem solving. Applications: Students study two areas:

  • Statistics
  • Mechanics

Entry requirements

GCSE grade 7 in Mathematics


Assessment is linear with examinations at the end of the two-year course.

The course is 100% examination based.

Paper 1: Pure Maths 1 (100 marks). 2 hours duration.

Paper 2: Pure Maths 2 (100 marks). 2 hours duration.

Paper 3: Section A: Statistics (50 marks). Section B: Mechanics (50 marks). 2 hours duration.
