Dance A Level at Twynham School

Course description

This course is designed for students wanting to further develop both practical and theoretical dance skills in a variety of contexts. It is for those who enjoy composing, performing and appreciating dance.

Candidates are required to perform a solo and group dance. A 1 hour 30 minute final end of year written exam consisting of 2 sections, structured questions and two essay questions drawing on the dancer's training, choreography and knowledge of professional repertoire.

Candidates are required to choreograph a group dance and again accompany this with a set of programme notes. Perform a solo dance or piece of professional repertoire. The final 1 hour 30 minute written examination consists of two sections from which candidates answer one question from each section. In section 1, students are required to investigate one style of dance either ballet, modern dance or jazz or an area of study such as a company. Section 2 focuses on a professional set work.

Unit 2 - Choreography and Performance

Unit 3 - Dance Appreciation

Unit 4 - Group Choreography and Solo Performance.

Entry requirements

Essential Entry Requirements:

Grade B or above at GCSE in Dance

A minimum of 4 ‘B’ grades and 2 ‘C’ grades to include C or above in English and Mathematics

Preferred Entry Requirements

GCSE Dance grade C or relevant previous dance experience
