Economics A2 level at Shoeburyness High School

Course description

Throughout the course you will develop an understanding of how the economy affects each and every one of us, as well as discover the problems and opportunities faced by the government, firms and consumers in ensuring economic success. In this linear course you will gain a coherent combination of microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life.

Entry requirements

  • English Grade 5 or above
  • Mathematics Grade 5 or above


What’s in the exam?

Paper 1 (35% of total qualification) – Paper 1 will assess microeconomics and questions will be drawn from Theme 1: Introduction to Markets and Market Failure and Theme 3: Business behaviour and the labour market. Duration 2 hours 100 marks available.

Paper 2 (35% of total qualification) - Paper 2 will assess macroeconomics and questions will be drawn from Theme 2: The UK Economy; performance and policies and Theme 4: A global perspective. Duration 2 hours 100 marks available.

Paper 3 (30% of total qualification) - Paper 3 will assess content across all four themes. Duration 2 hours 100 marks available.

Future opportunities

This qualification should enable you to progress on to a straight economics degree with a focus on theory, or a degree in applied economics. Alternatively students may like to study a business economics or mathematical economics degree. Employment in finance, banking, insurance, accountancy, management and consultancy. Some students become professional economists.
