Introduction to the Hospitality Industry City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma at Bedford College

Course description

This course will provide you with the skills that are required in a professional hospitality environment. It will also assist you in gaining employment in the exciting hospitality industry. You will learn valuable basic food preparation, cooking and presentation skills. It is highly sought after by restaurants, bars, hotels and eateries.

Course content

This course will provide you with the skills that are required in a professional hospitality environment. It will also assist you in gaining employment in the exciting hospitality industry. You will learn valuable basic food preparation, cooking and presentation skills. You will also undertake Maths, English and Food Safety (Level 2) qualifications.

You will cover:

  • Boiling, steaming and poaching
  • Roasting, baking and grilling
  • Stewing and braising
  • Cook preparation
  • Health & safety
  • Healthy eating
  • Introduction to the Hospitality Industry 
  • Teamwork
  • Food Safety
  • Food & Beverage Service Skills

 

This is a study programme which will combine a range of essential skills that are required for the Hospitality Industry. You will be studying, learning and completing practical and theory assessments in basic kitchen skills essential for this fast paced industry. You will also be required to continue with your Maths and English studies until you achieve the required grade. If you already hold the required grade in Maths and English you will be expected to complete a work experience programme to further enhance your catering skills and speed. This study programme also includes working in our busy training restaurant, where you will provide first class Food & Beverage Service Skills to our customers.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a genuine interest in catering. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level or successful completion of an entry level qualification would be an advantage.

Assessment

Practical assessments, written assignments and written knowledge test papers.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress to the Professional Cookery City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma. Alternatively, you can go into employment in a variety of catering establishments, such as hotels, public houses and fast food outlets.

Further information

To take part in this course you will need to purchase a ’25 Restaurant uniform (£250) and suitable footwear. We have a nominated supplier which can provide you with a discount, contact us for more details. You will also need to pay £20 to cover the Good Food Show trip. If you are aged 16-18, tuition fees, exam fees and College membership are free.
