Core Maths (Enrichment) at Hillview School for Girls
Core Maths is offered to all students who have achieved a grade C or better in GCSE Mathematics but who are not studying mathematics at AS or A Level.
It is a relatively new course designed by the Department of Education in collaboration with universities and employers to ensure that students leave full-time education with all of the mathematical skills they may need for further study or work.
The course covers aspects of functional mathematics that are relevant to a wide range of subjects and careers. These include financial maths (personal budgeting, understanding a payslip, loans and interest, financial planning), statistics (interpreting data, data collection, sampling, producing an evidence based report), probability (evaluating risk/reward, making evidence based predictions, simulation) and decision mathematics (planning an event, critical path analysis).
Students are required to meeting the entry requirements to Hillview Sixth form plus a Grade C/Grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths.
Core Mathematics is assessed by examination at the end of Year 13. There is no coursework element.
The Core Maths qualification generates the same number of UCAS points as an AS Level and is designed to assist in the transition from Sixth Form to either further study or work. It will demonstrate to employers that students' understanding of Mathematics has developed further than GCSE.
Core Maths can be linked to a wide range of subject areas in the post-16 curriculum.
