Course description

Workshop Environment

Our investments in our Engineering workshops ensure that this purpose-built area is in-line with industry standards and operates as a high quality learning facility, whilst reflecting a real working environment.

Our brand new automotive workshop opened its doors in September 2013, and contains an abundance of industry-standard equipment provided by some of the world’s leading brands, including Car-O-Liner and Snap-On.

The College also has a fully equipped car body shop which contains state-of-the-art equipment including automated car ramps and a dedicated workshop space.

All of our tools and materials are sourced through suppliers who provide equipment for the wider Engineering and Motor Vehicle industry.

Work Experience

Gaining experience in the workplace will give your portfolio a boost and will show employers that you have gained a broad range of work skills whilst studying for your qualifications. This is a great way to improve your confidence in a real working environment.

Our Placement Officers will find you a suitable employer and workplace, where you will undertake a work placement of over 30 hours throughout the academic year. Depending on which qualification you are working towards, this may be in a block or split over a number of weeks.

Previous Motorsport students have experienced the thrill of the race track by working in the pits at performance car events.

Upon successful completion of your work placement, we would hope that you would gain a glowing work reference for your portfolio. It is also an excellent opportunity to develop links with a business who may be interested in employing an Apprentice.

Events and Trips

An important part of learning your trade is to gain inspiration from others. Whether it’s attending events or visiting businesses operating in the industry, we endeavour to provide you with opportunities outside of college to broaden your knowledge of the sector. In previous years, students have enjoyed visits to the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre,  Avago Karting, NEC World Skills show and Lincoln Electric UK headquaters.

Through our excellent relationships with local businesses, we often invite experienced tradesmen into the College to talk about their journey to success. Previously, we have welcomed guest speakers from NGK Spark plugs, Carlube Motor Oil, WIX, LUK Clutches, and Bullseye.

English and Maths

Alongside your main programme, you will attend classes to develop your skills and confidence in English and Maths. These skills are extremely important for any future job role that you may have.

Functional skills are essential for tasks such as planning engineering projects, vehicle diagnostics and performance, creating costing and reports, understanding vehicle geometry and communicating with others.

If you are interested in pursuing self-employment and dream of being your own boss, English and Maths skills are absolute necessities when it comes to completing your tax return, calculating your finances, creating professional documents and promoting your business.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

It’s imperative that all of our students adhere to Health and Safety regulations in our workshops, therefore PPE is required to be worn at all times during practical sessions. This varies per course, however it typically includes gloves, overalls, ear protection, eye protection and a dust mask.

You will be required to provide your own boots for hygiene purposes, however all other PPE equipment will be available in each workshop.

Course content

This course covers:

•        Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment

•        Supporting Job Roles in the Automotive Environment

•        Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment

•        Diagnosing and Rectifying Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults

•        Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Engine Faults

•        Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Chassis System Faults

•        Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Faults

Entry requirements

Entry Requirements:

• 4 GCSEs grade A* to D

• GCSE English or Maths, grade C or above

• Vocational equivalent will be considered

• Successful curriculum interview and assessment

• You will attend a college-based assessment for English and Maths, where you will need to achieve a Level Two

Money Matters

The College has a number of funds which are there to help support you if you find yourself in financial difficulties that are affecting your attendance at college or your studies.

16–19 Bursary

If you’re aged between 16 and 19 years and in full-time education or training, you may be eligible for a mandatory or discretionary bursary. Young people in the following groups are eligible to receive a mandatory bursary of up to £1,200 a year.

  • Young people in care
  • Care leavers
  • Young people claiming income support/Universal Credit in their own name
  • Disabled young people who receive both Employment Support Allowance/Universal Credit and Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in their own name

However, other students facing genuine financial difficulties may be awarded a smaller, discretionary bursary which is means-tested and allocated based on specific priorities and eligibility criteria.

College eligibility criteria are currently based on a maximum household income of £25,000, good standards of behaviour, and over 90% attendance.

The bursary can help with costs such as food, transport, books and other course-related equipment and/or essentials.

Learner Support and Welfare Fund

The Discretionary Learner Support Funds can be used to buy equipment, help with travel expenses, childcare, and other costs related to attending college to study. These means-tested funds are limited, and allocated based on specific priorities and criteria.

If you are 19 years old or more, have a good attendance and your gross household income does not exceed £25,000, you could be eligible for these funds. The College also operates a small discretionary Emergency Welfare Fund to help students in crisis situations. Funds are limited and are intended to help in the short term.

Support with Childcare Costs

The College may be able to provide support for your childcare costs if you are a full-time student, either for part of, or for the full year.

If you are 20 years old or more, the College receives funding which may contribute towards the childcare you require.

In addition, young people under the age of 20 with childcare needs may be eligible for childcare and travel costs through the national ‘Care to Learn’ scheme. Find out if you’re eligible by visiting: www.direct.gov.uk/caretolearn

16-18 Student Concessionary Bus Pass

If you are attending college on a full-time basis and you meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible for a concessionary bus pass for bus and tram travel, and halved fares on local Northern Rail services in South Yorkshire.
