Biology - A Level at Bishop Milner Catholic College

Course description

The specification builds on concepts and skills that have been developed in the Biology units at GCSE. It presents biology as exciting, relevant and challenging.The specification emphasises the way in which scientists work and the contributions of science to modern society in a way that underpins the specification but is never intrusive.

Course content

Three modules will be covered:

Unit 1: Biology and disease. (Examination)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: the effect of pathogens and lifestyle on health, digestion, cell structure and the immune system.

Unit 2: The variety of living organisms. (Examination)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: variation, DNA structure, cell division, classification, and transport systems.

Unit 3: Investigative and practical skills. (Examination)

This will be assessed by a practical skills assessment and an investigative skills assignment, which will be marked internally and moderated by the exam board.This unit is worth 20% of the AS marks or 10% of the A2 marks.

What will I study during the A2 course & how will it be assessed?

Three modules will be covered:

Unit 4: Populations and environment. (Examination)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: ecosystems, photosynthesis, respiration and nutrient cycles.

Unit 5: Control in cells and in organisms. (Examination)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: nerve impulses, muscles, temperature control, protein synthesis, cloning and genetic fingerprinting.

Unit 6: Investigative and practical skills. (Examination)

This will be assessed by a practical skills assessment and an investigative skills assignment, which will be marked internally and moderated by the exam board.This unit is worth 10% of the total A2 marks.

5 A* - C GCSE Passes, B grade in GCSE Science
