Accounting (AAT) Advanced Apprenticeship at Colchester Institute

Course description

The Advanced Accounting Apprenticeship is the second level of the Accounting Apprenticeship programme. As with the Intermediate Apprenticeship, the course follows the AAT qualification and aims to provide you with the relevant and practical skills necessary to carry out a range of accounting and finance jobs. Gaining an AAT qualification opens up a world of possibilities. Accounting technicians can be found in all sectors of the economy, from industry to public services, from commerce to accountancy practices. Accounting technicians can be found at different levels too – from accounting clerks to financial controllers. In smaller organisations, accounting technicians may be the only fully trained and qualified accounting staff.

You will follow the AAT Diploma Level 3 in Accounting and develop the skills necessary to prepare final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, together with management accounting skills relating to costing, reporting financial information and budgeting for cash.

Units include:

  • Accounts Preparation
  • Cash Management
  • Costing
  • Indirect Tax
  • Spreadsheet Software

As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also be required to complete Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 2/GCSEs in maths and English.

Entry requirements

Students would normally be expected to have a relevant level 2 qualification, or 5 GCSEs (grades A*- C), including English and maths. ICT is also desirable, and a pass in a basic bookkeeping test.

Future opportunities

Possible progression to the Level 4 Diploma in Accounting to gain AAT Technician status. In the long term, the completion of this course could lead to CIMA, ACCA and ACA.
