Children's Play, Learning and Development (Level 2) at New College Swindon

Course description

BTEC courses are national qualifications which will give you a good foundation of knowledge in child care.  This is a one-year, full-time course which will enable you to progress to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning & Development (Early Years Educator), or the BTEC Level 3 Award in Children’s Play, Learning & Development.

Course content

There are seven units in this qualification.  You will study a number of units at any one time.  Each unit will vary in length and may be spread over one or more terms.  The units are:

Patterns of Child Development

Promoting Children’s Development through Play

The Principles of Early Years Practice

Promoting Children’s Positive Behaviour


Health & Safety in Early Years Settings

Supporting Children’s Language and Literacy Development

Making Healthy Food Choices for Children


Entry requirements

You should have at least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including Maths and English.  Students with equivalent qualifications or experience may be considered on individual merits.  If you are progressing from a CACHE Level 1 course, your overall grade should be a B or Merit.

Future opportunities

The course can lead directly to jobs in early years care and education.  You may find work with voluntary and private agencies or with families, as a Nursery assistant, Classroom assistant, Pre-school assistant or a Nanny.  Alternatively, you could progress on to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator), or the BTEC Award in Children’s Play, Learning and Development.
