Physics AS/A Level at Fitzharrys School

Course description

This is a subject which is now a reformed A level which means that the result of the AS exams does not contribute to the overall A level mark and grade. If a student leaves the course after AS then this new type of AS is worth 40% of the UCAS points of the full A level for University entry in 2017 onwards. If a student completes the two year A level course then it is only assessment at the end of the second year that counts towards the full A level grade.

Course content

AS

Development of practical skills in Physics
Foundation of Physics (quantities & units, scalars & vectors, measurements)
Forces & motion (Motion, forces, work, energy & power, materials, Newton’s laws) Electrons, waves & photons (Charge & current, energy, power & resistance, electrical circuits, waves, quantum physics)

A2

Newtonian world and astrophysics (Thermal physics, circular motion, oscillations, gravitational fields, astrophysics)
Particles & medical physics (Capacitors, electric fields, electromagnetism, nuclear & particle physics, medical imaging)

A minimum of 12 assessed activities during the two years.

AS:

Paper 1 Breadth in Physics 70 marks (50%) 1hr30min Multiple choice (20) Structured Questions (50)

Paper 2 Depth in Physics 70 marks (50%) 1hr30min Structured questions and extended response questions.

A2:

Paper 1 Modelling Physics 100 marks (37%) 2h15min

Paper 2 Exploring Physics 100 marks (37%) 2h15min

P1&2 Multiple choice (15) Structured Questions (85)

Paper 3 Unified Physics 70 marks (26%) 1hr30min Structured questions and extended response questions

Full A level only. Teacher assessed, exam board moderated. Reported separately to A level grade – pass /fail only.

 

Future opportunities

Physics is recognised as a high status qualification essential for many careers in engineering as well as physics. It is also highly valued in supporting other scientific disciplines, as well as aiding entry into careers in many areas including finance and management amongst others.
