Sport, Fitness and Exercise Extended Diploma - EDEXCEL Level 3 at Newcastle College

Course description

There are academic and vocational aspects of this course that will provide you with the specialist knowledge and skills you need to either progress to higher education or gain employment. A high proportion of students from this course progress to the Newcastle College Foundation Degrees and other leading Higher Education institutions both within the North East and across the country to complete their degree level study. It is also recognised by employers and is good preparation for employment in the leisure, health and fitness industry.
This course is over 2 years and after the first year you will gain a L3 Diploma in Sport that is worth 90 credits. You will then be encouraged to return and complete year 2 to gain a L3 Extended Diploma in Sport that is worth 180 credits.

  • Fitness, Training and Programming
  • Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Sports Nutrition 

 Year 2:

  • Sport and Exercise Massage
  • Sport as a business
  • Practical Team Sports
  • Organizing Sports Events
  • Current issues in Sport
  • Analysis of Sports Performance
  • Physical Education and the Care of Children and Young People
  • Sports Development
  • Work Experience in Sport and Exercise  

Entry requirements

You will need at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths or a Level 2 Diploma with a Merit/Distinction grade profile and Level 2 English and maths, subject to an interview.

You will be assessed through a combination of:

  • Presentations
  • Viva's
  • Reports
  • Practical's
  • Essays
  • Written Assignments
  • Group and/or Individual Work

Future opportunities

If you successfully complete the course, you can progress to any of our Sport/Fitness-related Foundation 
Degrees.
This qualification is also an acceptable entry requirement for Degree/Foundation Degree courses run at other 
Higher Education institutions both in the region and across the country.

You will receive support from your tutor in terms of your application to University as well as having the opportunity to attend visits to academic institutions and Open Days.

 

You could find employment in areas such as the sports and leisure industry, sports coaching in sports clubs and schools and health and fitness clubs.
