French A Level at Chipping Sodbury School
The course will allow you to develop further your language skills in order to achieve a high level of communication. You will also broaden your general study skills and exam techniques. You will, of course, study the contemporary French culture and society in depth including discussing and debating the following topics:
- Social issues and trends
- Political and artistic culture
- Literary texts and films
The listening and reading tasks will refer to authentic material and will aim to make you an independent linguist. The speaking and writing tasks will develop your ability to communicate and express your own thoughts and opinions.
For all Level 3 courses, students are expected to have achieved a minimum of 5 GGSEs at grade C or equivalent. For A Levels this should include both English and Maths. Plus B in French.
A2 level linear exam – to be assessed in 2018
- Paper 1: Examination (40% of A-level) on aspects of French society (current trends, current issues, artistic culture, political life) – Listening, Reading and Writing – 2.30 hours
- Paper 2 : Examination (30% of A-level) on texts / films analysis from a set list – Writing – 2 hours preparation time)
- Paper 3: Speaking (30% of A-level) including a discussion and a presentation – 21-23 minutes
A language broadens your choice of career as there are an increasing number of career paths which require specific foreign language skills in the increasingly global job market. Tourism and travel industries and international businesses are examples of careers requiring foreign language skills. Learning a foreign language could also improve your chance of studying at a good university or of joining the Erasmus scheme whilst at university. A language will provide you with confidence and a strong ability to communicate.
