Course description

The course is intended to provide an educational foundation for those wishing to pursue a career in the forensic science field or as a science technician in a wide variety of laboratory settings.

Successful students will be able to move on to employment or apply for a degree or Higher National Diploma programme.

This course will normally be studied as part of an A level programme.  Completion of the Year 1 programme is equivalent to one AS level and completion of the Year 2 programme is equivalent to one A level.

Course content

You will study three units in the first year for the BTEC Certificate and a further three in the second year to complete the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma. The majority of units are science based.

The Science related units are mainly chemistry based but also cover biology and physics. Practical skills are assessed throughout the year and involve carrying out set tasks, making accurate observations, measurements, processing the results and evaluating the tasks.

In the Forensic Evidence unit you will develop your knowledge and skills by taking part in a simulated crime scene investigation and analysing the evidence in the laboratory.

Entry requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English Language and usually Mathematics.

Assessment

You will work through a continuous programme of assignments, class activities, practical tasks, discussions, presentations and written reports. Each assignment will be graded against the unit criteria and from there you will get an overall grade (Pass, Merit or Distinction).

Future opportunities

Progression onto undergraduate courses may be available if you perform well in both the subsidiary diploma and A-Levels. Alternatively you could seek employment for example as a laboratory technician or associate practitioner.
