Chinese (Pre-U) *FEES PAYABLE* at Oundle School
The aim of this course is to enable candidates to develop the language skills to communicate confidently and clearly in Mandarin Chinese as well as to provide them with an opportunity to gain an insight into contemporary Chinese-speaking societies. Intellectual advancement through close engagement with Chinese texts, the articulation of readings and justification of opinions is carried out by candidates at this level in both Chinese and English.
Speaking [25%] 12 - 15 minutes Prepared topic discussion (5-7 minutes); general conversation (6-8 minutes
Listening, Reading & Translation 2½ hours [25%] Comprehension questions in English on passages communicated aurally and on paper; candidates will also write down individual words using pinyin romanization and tones; a literal translation and an explanation in English for three chengyu (Chinese sayings) taken from a list of 25 prescribed in the syllabus; the translation of a short passage of vernacular Chinese (not more than 200 characters) into English.
Writing & Usage 2 hours [25%] Exercises testing radical and stroke order skills as well as the use of grammar markers, aspect markers and measure words; the composition of a letter of 80–100 characters; one essay in Chinese of 175–225 characters from a choice of six titles.
Chinese Culture 2½ hours [25%] Candidates prepare two options, one from Topics in Chinese Culture and the other from Chinese Literature and Film. In the examination candidates write two essays in English of 600-750 words.
