AS Physical Education at Phoenix Academy

Course description

The AS Course offers an introduction to the academic study of Physical Education whilst allowing students the opportunity to express themselves in their chosen sporting discipline. We firmly believe in making lessons as interactive and as engaging as possible. The year allows an introduction to physiology, specifically the way in which our body adapts to exercise, to sports psychology, it’s mental approach to exercise, training and competition and to the acquisition of skills, the way skills are acquired and used in performance. These aims are examined in Unit 1 together with opportunities for participation and sport in an historical context. The practical component, Unit 2, involves students performing in two chosen sports or coaching or officiating. The number of sports on offer is varied. Coursework and Assessment AS: Unit 2 is 40% of AS and consists of two parts. Students are assessed on their ability to perform, analyse and evaluate the execution of core skills/techniques in isolation and in a structured practice in their chosen sport. They may then either act as a coach or official, demonstrating both effectiveness and understanding in their chosen role, or perform in another sporting discipline. Examination Unit 1 - 2 hours - answer all 7 questions - 60% of AS. Taken in May of Year 12 (30% of A2). Unit 2 - practical - ongoing from September to May - 40% of AS. Externally moderated in March of Year 12 (20% of A2).
