Music AS/A2 Level at Alexandra Park School

Course description

This course teaches students to develop and apply musical knowledge, understanding and skills in order to form a personal and meaningful relationship with music. They will be encouraged to engage critically and creatively with a wide range of music and musical contexts and reflect on how music is used in the expression of personal and collective identities. Students will study music from a variety of genres and styles including the Western Classical Tradition and Popular styles. The course provides many opportunities for practical work but there is also a strong emphasis on theoretical and analytical listening work. There is a substantial terminal examination in both AS and A2 whilst performing and composing work is assessed through coursework.

Course content

All students will complete the AS coursework during Year 12 and sit the AS exam in the summer of Year 12.

The A Level is a linear two-year course. Students complete all coursework in the 2nd year of the course and sit a final exam in May/June of Year 13.

Entry requirements

Students should have at least grade C or above at Music GCSE or Grade 5 or higher in a musical instrument or voice. In addition, students must be currently learning a musical instrument / voice or be able to read music notation.

Future opportunities

Further study of Music or Performing Arts in higher education at HND or degree level.

A Level Music could lead to a career in a range of performing arts disciplines or the entertainment industry.
