Course Overview

This is a full-time one year course. The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women's and Men's Hairdressing (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as a ladies and gents stylist. This qualification is based on the hairdressing and barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) qualification. It is recognised by the UK's leading professional body (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist.

 

Students who undertake this course are expected to sit up to eleven end of unit exams set by the VTCT awarding body. This could be less depending on the optional units chosen as part of the course. Exams are available to be completed online or in hard copy format.

Where can this lead?

Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Hairdresser/Barber (SRH/B) with The Hairdressing Council. Career opportunities as a junior stylist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

 

  • Commercial ladies and gents salons

  • Specialist African type unisex salons

  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

  • Product manufacturing and training

 

Course Entry Requirements

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing / barbering and/or a successful skills test and interview.

 

Course Breakdown

This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age groups, and will develop knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare learners for employment as a junior ladies and gents hairdresser/ stylist. Learners will have their unisex hairdressing skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a Junior Stylist including health and safety, client consultation, shampoo and conditioning hair, cutting women’s hair, the art of dressing hair, cutting men's hair and cutting facial hair. These units are all mandatory.

Learners will also develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional units which include: reception duties, promoting products and services to clients and colouring hair. The full list of optional units is presented in the learner Record of Assessment book (RoA).

 

Enrichment Opportunities

Lessons will take place in our fully equipped hairdressing salon at the Kevin Shore Vocational Academy and will be taught by an ‘industry standard’ qualified tutor. Students will be required to participate in work placement as part of this course and will have the opportunity to work alongside local hairdressers. On successful completion of this course, students will have achieved a professional standard qualification.

 

 

Additional Information

The primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment as a junior stylist, learners may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking a Technical Level qualification in Hairdressing or Barbering Level 3. These include:
