Hairdressing Level 2 Diploma at Furness College

Course description

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in hairdressing (QCF) is a qualification that has been designed to enable you to learn a wide range of hairdressing skills and techniques.

Designed to be completed in the work place it tests your ability to do the job whilst at work.

Course content

Units studied include:
• advising and consulting with clients
• shampooing and conditioning
• styling
• setting
• cutting
• perming
• colouring hair
• reception duties
• client care
• Health and safety

Every full-time course will include a real experience of work.

Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

Entry requirements

Level 1 in Hairdressing/Beauty Therapy or other equivalent hairdressing qualification with 4 GCSEs at grades A – D (including English and Maths) is essential.

As this course contains a significant amount of science the science GCSE must be at grade C or above and you will be expected to sit an aptitude test. You will be required to attend an interview.

Assessment

All the practical work is assessed in the salon on paying clients and ‘model’ client base. Practical and oral questions prove knowledge. A portfolio of evidence is built up throughout the course.

Financial information

There is a dress code of purple tunic, black cardigan and trousers for £62. (The uniform is to be purchased through college). Closed toe shoes must be purchased independently. A day trip to Manchester Live Hair Show – approximately £25. Kits to purchase from £112 - 200. An optional trip to London Excel Hair Show, £150 (over 18s only). All excursions are subject to change and additional items can be included.

Future opportunities

Students can progress on to the full-time NVQ 2 Barbering, full-time Level 3 Ladies Hairdressing or an Advanced Apprenticeship. The NVQ 2 allows you to work in the industry as a junior stylist. Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview.
