Extended Project Qualification at Balcarras School

Course description

The Extended Project (EPQ) forms part of the AQA Baccalaureate, however it can also be taken as a separate qualification. All students at Balcarras sixth form begin their EPQ journey in Year 12 and a considerable proportion of students choose to extend this study to Year 13. Students are required to produce a project of significant length in an area of particular interest to them. The project can take the form of an essay, performance, sculpture or many other formats. The EPQ aims to stretch and challenge the most able students and is therefore highly regarded by universities and employers alike.

The EPQ allows each student to embark on a self-motivated and largely independent project; the students have complete freedom over their project as long as they can prove that their chosen title pushes them beyond their A-level syllabi. Students must choose a topic, plan, research and develop their idea and decide on their finished product. AQA encourages students’ curiosity and creativity, and each year we are impressed by the huge range of inspiring and interesting ideas that the students come up with. Further to this, the freedom of the course enables students to develop their time management and organisational skills.

Alongside their independent research and study, students receive allocated study time in Year 12, providing them with vital skills such as referencing and source reviews. A supervisor will be assigned to each student and regular meetings will take place to advise and guide them through the process. EPQ is an extremely valuable course, preparing students for the challenge and rigour of university study.
