Current Affairs / Debating *FEES PAYABLE* at St Mary's Senior School

Course description

As part of the LVI Form Carousel, the girls spend three weeks looking at various issues of current affairs which may be topical or hold particular relevance, or which may be totally new to them. This course is designed not only to broaden their horizons and to expose them to concerns outside St Mary’s and indeed the UK, but also to enable them to construct powerful arguments in a short space of time and to argue their case. Feedback from university interviews increasingly tells us that candidates are assessed on the way that they think and their ability to respond to unprepared challenges in a clear and well-reasoned manner. Girls are sometimes asked to argue the case for the opposite of what they believe and, as a result, they become more adept at understanding both sides of an argument. Topics discussed range from contemporary UK and US politics to terrorism laws; stem cell research to the role of women in the workplace.
