Chefs Apprenticeship at University of West London

Course description

The apprenticeship is designed to help you to develop your skills as a chef, while enabling you to gain a range of qualifications. It aims to open opportunities for you within the hospitality and catering industry by partaking in a partnership between an employer and the University, giving you an excellent opportunity to learn within the industry whilst being supported to gain the necessary qualifications to enable you to progress.

As part of the apprenticeship, you will need to attend the University each week, where you will spend your time in a training kitchen completing practical work and assessments. You will also undertake some classroom studies, completing the work necessary for the theoretical and key skill elements of the course.


Chef tutors will regularly visit you at your workplace, to monitor and plan your progress. Some practical assessments will also take place in your workplace. Our apprenticeship scheme is run in conjunction with The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts. Our apprentices are normally employed in prestigious establishments operated by The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts members, such as The Ritz, the Dorchester, the Hilton and the Royal Automobile Club.

Year one

  • NVQ Level 2 Professional Cookery
  • Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering
  • Enhanced Hospitality Skills
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities
  • Master Classes in Poultry and Fish
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1
  • Functional Skills English Level 1.

Year two

  • NVQ Level 3 Professional Cookery
  • Enhanced Hospitality Skills
  • Master Classes in Game and Shellfish
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 2
  • Functional Skills English Level 2.

Year three

  • NVQ Level 3 Pastry and Confectionery
  • Master Classes in Bread and Chocolate.

It is also possible to include extra short courses for example, Foundation
Health and Safety.

Entry requirements

To join the apprenticeship scheme, applicants will need to be in full-time employment or will be placed in employment within the catering industry, with an employer who is committed to supporting them through their apprenticeship.

    • The main reception is on St. Mary's Road which lies on the B455 between the A4 and the A4020, Uxbridge Road.

      The M4 motorway is a few minutes drive away from Ealing (Junction 2), and the A40, M40 and M25 are all easily accessible.

      The campus has two London underground stations within easy walking distance:

      • Ealing Broadway (Central and District Lines) – a 10 minute walk away or a short bus journey (there is a regular bus service, the Number 65, which runs from outside Ealing Broadway station to the main campus)
      • South Ealing (Piccadilly Line) – a 10 minute walk to the main campus.

      University of West London has car parks for use by students at all campuses. However, like most town centre based universities, car parking is limited and spaces cannot always be guaranteed.

      The University operates a Green Transport policy and actively promotes alternative modes of transport such as subsidised bus schemes, car sharing and the use of cycles. Ample cycle racks are available and special car parking spaces are provided for the disabled.
