A Level French and Spanish at Ilfracombe Academy

Course description

Students who have a desire to improve their language understanding will find that a language A level compliments most subjects. This course will enable you to communicate in the written and spoken language for a variety of purposes in the following topic areas;

  •  world and local issues and events,
  •  the environment,
  •  citizenship
  •  society and culture.

The structure of the course is the same for both French and Spanish. This will be studied over 4 x 1 hour lessons per week as well as supported self-study periods.

Course content

Year 12 – Leading to AS Level

UNIT 1 - Dealing with issues from the target language country. Prepared oral topic of 8-10 minutes

UNIT 2 - Reading, writing, listening and responding. A mixture of listening and reading tasks that are answered in both English and the target language. Followed by a short essay task (240 words).

Year 13 – Leading to A Level

UNIT 3 - 15 minute oral debate

UNIT 4 - Research based essay.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including GCSE French/Spanish.
