Critical Thinking at All Saints School

Course description

It is an opportunity for able students to have a fast paced, well structured and demanding course with very good levels of language. There is some time for intellectual puzzles, thinking about thinking, creative tasks and general strategies for effective reasoning. Most of the time is spent analysing arguments and information from articles, data tables, photographs and eye witness accounts of events. There is also work on constructing effective arguments and detecting flaws in reasoning. This is a very good course for students to experience as it offers opportunities to improve essays and critical faculties. It is well regarded by universities and high grades indicate very mature reasoning strategies and excellent academic vocabulary. Successful Oxbridge students and applicants to Medicine reported that the cognitive ability entrance tests contained many elements which we practise in Critical Thinking.

The extra time commitment compared to General Studies means that this should be requested by students who will cope well with the demands of all their other subjects. (Limited numbers, currently one group, maximum 20 students).
