What students can expect of the course

  • AS/A2 Biology builds on the approaches to studying physiology and ecology at GCSE.
  • AS investigative and practical work assesses practical skills, together with displaying data and evaluating techniques and results. The work in A2 includes the statistical analysis of results.
  • Students will have opportunities to develop practical skills, and hone them as they progress.
  • Students are supported in developing appropriate study styles (eg with note taking), in selecting relevant reading material, in developing the skills of question answering and statistical analysis.
  • The study of Biology at this level is an ideal foundation for medicine, veterinary and physiology amongst many other courses in Higher Education.
  • Course content

    AS Level

    Biology and disease

  • Biochemistry, cell function, exchange with the environment.
  • The heart and circulation. Disease.

    The variety of living organisms

  • DNA, variation, exchange, mass transport systems.

    Investigations and practical skills.

    A2 Level

    Populations and environment

  • Communities, populations fieldwork.

    Control in cells and in organisms.

  • The use of DNA, nervous coordination, response to stimuli, medical applications

    Investigative and practical skills

  • Entry requirements

    GCSE grade B in Biology or Double Science
