Biology at Advanced Level aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of all life processes and provide you with a framework for further study on a number of undergraduate courses at university and future employment. Underpinning Advanced Level Biology is the consideration of 'How Science Works' which illustrates the relevance of Biology in Society.

Course content

Biology is taught as a series of topics at AS and A2 level. Regular assessment of these topics gives you clear feedback on how you are progressing, identifying the subject areas in which you are performing well, and any areas that may need to be improved before the terminal examination. The content of the course is divided into six units over AS and A2.

Entry requirements

Biology is a challenging and demanding course, requiring a high level of commitment. You will need at least a Higher Tier grade B in Biology and a BB in Science. You will also need at least a grade C in Mathematics at GCSE to take Biology at AS/A2 Level. A grade B in Chemistry is recommended to study this course.



Unit 1 Biology and Disease

This unit extends ideas about the function of body systems and introduces biochemistry, cell structure, transport mechanisms and immunology. Assessment: short answer questions, short comprehension and a structured question (33% AS, 16% A2).

Unit 2 The Variety of Living Organisms

This unit covers DNA and cell mitosis and meiosis. Organism size and surface area will be linked to gas exchange as well as mass transport in plants and animals. Assessment: short answer questions, data handling, assessing analysis and evaluation (46% AS, 23% A2).

Unit 3 Investigative and Practical Skills

Practical Examination (20% AS, 10% A2).

Biology at Advanced Level builds on concepts that have been developed at GCSE. In the future it will allow you to explore a wide range of fields including the obvious, Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Science to the not so obvious, Forensic Scientist, Editor in Cheif, Science Correspondent. You will taught by dedicated and knowledgeable staff who will work with you to help you to achieve your full potential in this subject. Practical skills are integral to all units and are assessed as part of units 3 and 6.
