Course description

English Language and Literature offers an ideal opportunity for a modern approach to the study of Literature and non-literary texts, by examining the language used in writing and speech. You will gain a valuable insight into the workings of the English language, against the backdrop of fascinating literature, from William Shakespeare to Stella Gibbons and Truman Capote. You will have the chance to write creatively and imaginatively in a style of your choice for the coursework element of the AS Level; whilst at the same time analysing a range of poems, each rich in poetic tradition and spanning a period of over 500 years. The AS course also involves the study of a pairing of novels, where you will analyse the writer’s techniques, exploring the development of characters, themes and links. Contemporary language investigation, involving analysis of spoken language and a wide range of text types, makes this a fully rounded and diverse course which covers the most popular aspects of English.
