English Language GCSE Resit at Wyke Sixth Form College

Course description

This course is for students who have studied at Key Stage 4 and have achieved a grade D. The course develops the reading and writing skills acquired previously in a clear and structured manner.

Course content

This course is designed to give students new opportunities to improve their understanding and use of both spoken and written language.

The course includes two examinations:

Unit 1 (1 hour) Reading (30%) – the development of close reading and analysis skills.

Unit 2 (1 hour) Writing (30%) – development of writing skills for specific audiences, purposes and contexts eg. letters, speeches, leaflets, handouts, etc.

Unit 3 Controlled assessments (30%) – study and critical analysis of a literary text (2 hours) and two writing tasks (narrative and descriptive writing – 2 hours in total).

Unit 4 Study of Spoken language written controlled assessment (10%) (2 hours).

In addition to the four units above, three speaking & listening assessments will be conducted as part of the course and a separate grade to the GCSE English Language qualification will be awarded.


60% externally assessed examination and 40% controlled assessment.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully pass their single level two year at Wyke can look to progress onto level three at the College or use their qualifications to access another course, apprenticeship or employment opportunity offered by another provider.
