First Award BTEC Level 2 at Lytchett Minster School

Course description

The Lytchett Sixth Form has developed a unique one-year course that combines skills and training which will prove interesting, useful, and will help students progress on to the next stage of their life, whether here, at college, at work or higher education. Having gained new knowledge and techniques, as well as vital qualifications, students can move up the ladder in their chosen field. Through selecting an agreed combination of the courses below, together with a GCSE retake in English or Maths, if required, a varied programme can be constructed.

Course content

Students will take a combination of 3 BTEC Level 2 First Award options, agreed through interview, together with a retake or retakes in GCSE English and Maths in order to gain grade C. In addition, one day per fortnight can be spent on work placement. Topics Covered: Students will study an agreed selection from the following:

  • BTEC First Award in Media
  • BTEC First Award in Travel and Tourism
  • BTEC First Award in Health and Social Care
  • GCSE retake in English and/or Maths if needed

Entry requirements

Students should have gained a profile of some grade C passes, some Ds and some Es at GCSE. In particular, there should be evidence that students have been able to meet coursework deadlines during GCSE, as this is such a key part of the BTEC courses. In order to study BTEC ICT at Level 3, the student must have previously gained at least merit standard in Level 2 ICT. Students should talk to Mrs Spanos or Mr Hannaford in the autumn term if they are interested in this course

Assessment

75% coursework, with porƞolios being assessed for each Unit and each course. There is likely to be one externally assessed exam worth 25% of the marks.

Students are set assignments which cover the Learning Aims of the courses, and are graded on how well they achieve these. These outcome grades add up to overall Unit grades. Students are awarded a Level 1 or a Level 2 Pass, a Merit or a Distinction for each qualification.

Double Distinction is equivalent to AA at GCSE, Double Merit equivalent to BB and Double Pass equivalent to C

Future opportunities

Successfully completing the BTEC First year will give plenty of strong options:

  • Students progress onto one of the school’s Level 3 BTEC Diplomas, currently available in Media, Health and Social Care, Performing Arts and Sport together with other AS levels where this is appropriate.
  • Students can apply to college for other vocational courses
  • Students can apply for employment or apprenticeships.
