Course content

Aims of the course:

Sociology is the study of western societies and the way in which these societies shape peoples behaviour. It provides students with the opportunity to understand the differences that exist within all societies and to gain an understanding of the world in which we live.

The course is designed to encourage candidates to

Develop contemporary knowledge and understanding of sociological theory and methods

Demonstrate the application of a wide range of skills, such as analysis, interpretation and application and evaluation

Consider the sociological themes of socialisation, culture, identity, social differentiation and power

Entry requirements

GCSE English, grade CC, Maths C, if Sociology GCSE take must have a C or above 

Assessment

Summary of Units:

Year 1 Unit 1 The Sociology of the Family

(AS) The purpose of the family, the changes to family structure, policy

Effecting family life, childhood, old age

Unit 2 The Sociology of Education and Sociological methods

The purpose of education, changes to the education structure in the

UK, educational attainment relating to class, gender and ethnicity,

Contemporary Sociological research in the field of education

Year 2 Unit 3 The Sociology of Beliefs in Society

(A2) The purpose of belief and religion, changing patterns of believers

and beliefs, differences in sects and cults

Unit 4 The Sociology of Crime and Deviance and Sociological theory and

Research Methods

Why commit crime? Crime patterns and statistics relating to age,

Gender, class and ethnicity. Suicide; is it a crime? Contemporary Sociological Research in the field of crime.
